Tabea Martin

Tabea Martin (Switzerland - 1978) is a prolific choreographer and performer, based in Amsterdam as well as in Basel and Zürich, Switzerland. After studying Modern Theatre Dance at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and Choreography at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie in Holland, she began developing her work as a choreographer in which sociological questions occupy a central role. As such, she takes human behaviour within different contexts as the subject of her research. Tabea focuses more on the creative process than the actual end result: losing one’s way, confronting the unknown, leaping hurdles, dealing with the emotions that arise, or discovering the unexpected.

Tabea has collaborated extensively with other choreographers and artists, including the filmmaker Lucy Cash for the B Motion Festival 2009 in Bassano del Grappa, the actor Matthias Mooij for the Theaterspektakel in Zürich 2010, the visual artist Nina Glockner and the musician Jelte van Andel for Dansateliers and Het LAB Utrecht 2008 – 2011, as well as the artist and performer Tchelet Weisstub and the filmmaker Itamar Mendes-Flor for the Culturescapes Festival 2011. She has also been invited to perform at the Theatertreffen Berlin, Impact in Essen, Dialogues of Springdance, Nottdance Festival and for the Choreoroam Project with Jonathan Burrows and Yasmeen Godder. In 2011 she was invited to work on an exchange project with Israel for the Culturescapes Festival as well as invited to work on Duets in Cyprus, for Dancehouse Limassol and in Italy for the Opera Estate Festival.
In 2012, Tabea will be creating new works for both the Stadttheater Bern and the Theatreschool in Amsterdam and will participate in the project “Act your Age”, a European collaboration between Holland, Cyprus and Italy, as well as the project “End of the World” by the Sweet & Tender Collective.

Her works include: “RAGE” / “PARADE” / “Keihard Kijken” / “sofort geniessen” (nominated for the 2010 ZKB Förderpreis) / “Duet for two dancers” (the Aerowaves Studio Award  / “Out of proportion” (“Prärie” Subventions Support for young artists in Switzerland).

2011 Awards : the Wim Bary Stipendia Prize for promising theatre talent by The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds in Holland / Aerowaves chose her as one of the priorities companies to tour her work in Europe / the Dutch Dance Days Prize, an award for promising young choreographers.
